Within the last few years the static requirements on covering systems in fruit growing have increased, because of changing weather conditions such as heavy rain, hail or storms have become more violent. The consequence is that the framework has to cope with increasing forces and therefore the structure as well the all materials used need to be constructed extremely stable.
In addition to the steel version a wooden structure meets all requirements of such covering systems.
According to the requirements we use Scandinavian wood, because it offers a special quality due to its slow growth, hence providing the perfect material for such a framework system. The systems made of wooden posts are characterized by a high resistance against strong gusts of wind and storms because the consistence of the material allows the wooden framework to work with the wind, not against. This flexibility simplifies the anchoring required. Also wood as a construction material offers an excellent price performance ratio.
As for the covers, we have been using the automatic ventilation covers for years, individually tailored in width according to the distance between rows.
For our framework construction only impregnated turned wooden posts from Scandinavia with a diameter of 12cm are used in order to guarantee the stability of the covering system. The posts are pushed into the soil at a minimum of 50cm, until they are tightly secured in the ground. The length of the inner posts is according to the height of the system, which is individually calculated for each covering project. The angled side posts are normally one meter shorter in dimension.
Plastic caps are screwed on top of the wooden posts, thus ensuring, when tightening the cables, the correct point of fixation of the cross cables. On the outside of the system posts are set at an angle, each one secured by an anchor, to ensure secure tensioning of the system.
To obtain a stable and weather resistant covering system all posts require to be tensioned by the use of cables and cross cables. Only high quality steel cables with a diameter of 6mm are used for the tensioning of the covering system. In general the cross cables are laid above the length cables, which results in a smooth base for the covers, as there are no cables beneath the roof of the covers.
All cables have in common that they reach and are fastened with cable clamps from the anchor on one side to the opposite anchor on the other side.In order to additionally stabilize and secure the system the outer posts are secured and tensioned with an 8mm steel cable to the ground anchors.
After the framework is completed and system is fully tensioned, the VOEN covers can be fixed to the structure. The covers are laid across the length cable, always overlapping by about 10cm, and fixed with the VEON top clips.
The other side of the covers, hanging into the middle of the row, is attached to the opposite cover by the use of the VOEN joining clip at a distance of 80cm, therefore achieving the typical roof shape. At the end of the rows the extra cover is pulled down and then fixed with elastics to the 6mm cables at the anchors.
